Do We Really Need Electrolytes Every Day? And Can They Help With Bloating?

If you’ve been scrolling social media lately, you’ve probably seen everyone talking about electrolytes — and not just for gym-goers or marathon runners. Now it’s all about daily hydration, bloat relief, and energy boosting.

So what’s the truth behind the trend? Do we actually need electrolytes every day and can they really help with bloating? Let’s unpack it.

What Electrolytes Actually Are

Electrolytes are minerals — mainly sodium, potassium, and magnesium — that help your body regulate hydration, nerve function, muscle contractions, and energy production.

They’re essential for life. Every heartbeat, muscle contraction, and cell function relies on a delicate balance of these minerals.

When that balance is off, you can experience:

  • Fatigue or sluggishness

  • Muscle cramps or twitches

  • Brain fog

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Headaches

  • Bloating or water retention

So yes — electrolytes are a big deal.

The Link Between Electrolytes and Bloating

This is where things get interesting — because there’s actually some truth behind the social media buzz.

1. They help regulate fluid balance

If you drink lots of plain water but eat very little salt (which many health-conscious women do), your body can start holding on to water to maintain sodium levels. Adding electrolytes — especially sodium and potassium — helps your body rebalance fluids, which can reduce puffiness and that “watery” bloat.

2. Potassium supports digestion

Potassium helps your digestive muscles contract properly. When levels are low, the gut can become sluggish, leading to bloating or constipation.

3. Magnesium relaxes muscles and supports regularity

Magnesium helps reduce water retention and can ease bloating related to PMS or perimenopause. It also calms the digestive system — another reason it’s a key mineral for midlife women.

So yes — if your bloating is related to water retention, dehydration, or mineral imbalance, electrolytes can genuinely help. But they won’t “cure” bloating caused by gut inflammation, hormonal changes, or food intolerances.

Do We Need Them Every Day?

The short answer: not always — but sometimes yes.

If you eat a whole-food diet, include enough vegetables, nuts, and natural salts, and aren’t sweating heavily, your body can maintain its electrolyte balance naturally.

But many midlife women find they feel noticeably better when adding electrolytes daily, especially if they:

  • Experience fatigue or energy dips

  • Feel bloated or puffy despite drinking plenty of water

  • Do regular workouts or strength training

  • Sweat more in warmer weather

  • Experience hormone-related water retention

It’s all about balance, not dependency — some days your body needs more support than others.

A Look at Some of the Better Brands

I’ve compared a few of the most talked-about 'clean' electrolyte options recently, and here’s a balanced look at each. (Prices correct at time of writing)

LiveGood Hydration Amplifier

Around £22 for 30 servings (including shipping to the UK)

✅ 100% organic ingredients

✅ Very clean label

✅ Certificate of Analysis for every batch (rare transparency- I have attached the certificate at the bottom of this blog)

✅ Two flavours: lemonade and watermelon (my absolute favourite!)

⚠️ Higher sodium than some others — may be too much on rest days if you’re not very active, or dilute it, as I do, in my litre bottle.

I have an affiliate link for LiveGood, so if you wish to check this out click here:

(Just to say, I do not get commission on products but would get a small commission from your membership subscription, should you become a member)

Hunter & Gather Restore

I use this clean brand alot for their condiments and oils such as they avocado mayonaise or avocado oil.

35 for 30 sachets

✅ Natural ingredients like sea salt and marine magnesium

✅ No artificial colours or sweeteners

⚠️ Taste can be quite salty according to reviews (I have not tried them myself)

⚠️ No publicly available batch testing or analysis, which I could find, at least.

LMNT

£17.09 for 12 sachets

✅ Super clean, simple formula — great for heavy sweaters or athletes

⚠️ Very high sodium — some find the taste overpowering

⚠️ Expensive per serving

⚠️ Again , no third oarty testing/certificates of analysis.

Ancient + Brave True Hydration

£21.60 for 15 servings

✅ Lower sodium levels and pleasant taste

✅ “Natural” feel with gentle ingredients

⚠️ Price per serving is higher

⚠️ No visible testing or transparency data again. Why do companies simply not do this?! So annoying! I just want to be clear what it is I'm actually ingesting!

Check Your Labels

Not all electrolyte products are created equal. Some of the big “sports” brands — like SiS Hydro — although 'Informed Sport' approved, so the ingredients contain no banned substances, they do include artificial sweeteners (such as sucralose), acidity regulators, caffein, and colourings.

When choosing your electrolytes, look for:

  • No artificial sweeteners or colours

  • Clear, transparent ingredient lists

  • Balanced sodium, potassium, and magnesium

  • Ideally, published batch testing or certificates of analysis

The Takeaway

Electrolytes can be a fantastic daily tool — especially for midlife women balancing hormones, hydration, and energy.

They can help:

  • Reduce bloating caused by water retention

  • Improve energy and focus

  • Support muscle function and recovery

  • Keep hydration levels balanced all day

But they’re not magic. They work best as part of an overall healthy lifestyle that includes proper nutrition, movement, and rest.

So before you buy into the hype, check your ingredients, listen to your body, and choose quality over marketing.
