How to Stay on Track with Exercise While on Holiday (Without Missing the Cocktails!)

Let’s be honest — the idea of exercising on holiday might sound as appealing as a sunburn. You’ve waited all year for this break. The sunlounger is calling, the all-you-can-eat buffet is whispering sweet nothings, and the idea of sweating in 30-degree heat? Not exactly top of the itinerary.

BUT… (and it’s a gentle but!) Staying active on holiday doesn’t mean missing out. In fact, a little movement can make your break feel even better — fewer bloated bellies, more energy, and an excuse for that second scoop of gelato.

Here’s how to keep moving without turning into the person who packs protein shakes and a kettlebell.

1. Check Out the Hotel Gym (Yes, Before You Book!)

If you’re anything like me, you’ll spend hours scrolling through hotel reviews for “which room has the best view” — but what about the gym? Even a basic one with a few dumbbells and a treadmill can make a difference. And if it has air con? That’s basically luxury cardio. And should you have a flash of motivation to want to complete a 30 min workout, then take me with you!- All 'Inner Circle' members have access to a library of recorded workouts you can follow from your mobile phone! (message me for more info!)

Also, don’t forget to check what classes or activities the hotel or resort offers. From beach yoga to aqua aerobics, paddleboarding to salsa dancing — it’s a great chance to try something new, move your body, and have a bit of fun (even if you look like Bambi on roller skates doing it). Who knows? You might discover a new favourite hobby — or at least burn a few calories laughing.

2. Pack Smart: Resistance Bands & Skipping Rope

Lightweight, versatile, and they take up less space than your emergency snacks. Resistance bands are brilliant for a quick strength session on the balcony, by the pool, or even in your hotel room while everyone else is still snoozing.

And skipping? Two minutes of that and you’ll feel like Rocky (or possibly just out of breath and mildly dizzy – both are valid).

3. Make Your Environment Your Gym

Look around — holidays are packed with fitness opportunities. Steps at the hotel? Run or walk up and down them a few times (bonus points if you pretend you're in a Rocky montage). Beach nearby? Sand is brilliant for toning the legs and glutes — just a quick walk will have your muscles working overtime.

Even sightseeing can turn into a mini workout — especially when you accidentally walk 18,000 steps because someone misread the map. You didn’t get lost, you just took the “scenic route.”

4. Set a Simple Goal: 10,000 Steps a Day

If workouts feel like too much, walking is your best friend. You’re exploring new places, soaking up the culture, and gently working off last night’s dessert. Pop your step count on your phone or watch and aim for that magic 10k. You’ll be amazed how quickly it adds up.

5. Rest is Part of the Plan Too

Here’s the thing — holidays are also about rest and recovery. If your body’s been pushing hard all year, lying flat with a book in one hand and a fruity drink in the other might be exactly what it needs.

Guilt-free rest is healthy. Especially when it’s followed by a swim, a walk along the beach, or a few hotel room lunges between outfit changes.

Final Thoughts from Your Coach on the Sun Lounger

You don’t need to “stick to the plan” perfectly to stay on track. A little movement most days, a splash of intention, and a whole lot of enjoyment — that’s the sweet spot.

So yes, bring the resistance bands. Yes, sneak in a balcony workout if you feel like it. But also say yes to the holiday. Because a healthy lifestyle includes living — not just lunges.

Have the best time — and if you do end up doing a quick workout, tag me so I can cheer you on from my own sunlounger
